TABA Awards 2011 Nomination

Because I’m a princess (in my own world), I know the value of accomplishment. I know the value of being crowned as the best, may it be as a blogger or any other title. This is why I want to nominate someone for the TABA Awards 2011 – and I shall send the rest of our kingdom to make sure he wins!

The TABA Awards (short for The Annual Kalsada Blog Awards) is a fun way of saluting fellow bloggers. Fun, because there is no strict and boring criteria. Fun, because the categories themselves are funny (imagine voting for the most handsome blogger!). Fun, because I’m sure that my candidate has a fighting chance.

For the TABA Awards 2011, I would like to nominate Mr. Stanley Chi of Stanley Chi as the Pinaka-Gwapong Blogger of the Year! Here are several wonderful reasons why:

Suplado is the new Sexy. Go ahead, Google that catchphrase, and you’ll see how it’s actually now a fact of life! Stanley Chi, dubbed as Mr. Suplado after his book Suplado Tips sold more than 3000 copies in under three months, is like the hottest patatas in the interweb! Even the business giant UniSilver Time believes in that mantra, which is why they made a watch with “Suplado is the new Sexy” etched onto the strap! True, that!
He’s so hot that Spot.ph said he is one of the Top Ten Sexy-Ugly Hotties! Stanley Chi is genuinely funny. And when someone’s funny, he’s so much more pogi. Stanley is a stand-up comic, a cartoonist, a TV host for a comedy show, and a humor book author. That’s funny times four!

Use a trusted concealer that does not cause your skin to dry up. You may also use the same foundation under your eyes; however, if you have extra dark under-eye circles, a concealer may be necessary. Of course, don’t overdo it, or you’ll end up looking a little overdone.
Use lip gloss to plump thin lips. The sheen of lip gloss reflects more light, giving the impression of thicker lips.
Use a lip liner to redefine your lips. This is especially useful if you have a marionette face: if the corners of the lips droop a little. Follow the outline of your lips, except when you reach the droopy corners, where your line should fade off.
Use pink lipstick and blush. A pink blush and lipstick both give the impression of young, healthy skin, as pink cheeks are often associated with youth.

Negative Aspects of Cosplay

Cosplay has received quite a following in the past few years. More and more people want to don costumes and becomes cosplayers, acting out roles, learning dynamic poses, and making their own costumes from scratch. Although cosplay has a lot of positive aspects, there are negative aspects to cosplay – and I’m here to talk about that white elephant in the room, so to speak.

As a fashion lover, I love the costumes worn by cosplayers! Sadly, many issues are now being brought up which point to the negative aspects of cosplay. Some of these are listed below.

Cosplay can be an act of fandom – or an act of obsession. Many anime and comic book fans want to cosplay their favorite characters. Simply put, they are true-blue fans. However, some people develop a certain obsession, where cosplay becomes an integral part of it.
Cosplay opens up a new breed of discrimination. One of the negative aspects of cosplay is that it makes many cosplayers prone to discrimination. They are discriminated in terms of gender (where males seem to have a lower rank than females), looks (where less-than-pretty cosplayers are laughed at or criticized), weirdness (where certain cosplayers are immediately dubbed weird or eccentric), and race (where cosplayers who do not look Japanese are frowned upon). For instance, try looking up the most popular cosplayers and you are bound to see handsome or pretty faces who look Japanese.
Cosplay gives the world a wrong portrait of Japanese culture. Many, though not all, cosplayed characters are actually Japanese in origin. A lot of fictional characters imitated by cosplayers come from Japanese anime, mangga, or graphic novels. However, cosplayers portray these Japanese characters as whimsical or cutesy, sometimes saying sayonara or kawaii, both japanese words, in little, high-pitched voices. FYI, the falsetto voices are deemed disrespectful by the Japanese as they seem to mock the Japanese race. The inaccurate portrayal of anime characters by cosplayers are seen by the Japanese as “cheap imitation”.
Cosplay encourages people to address their self-esteem, self-confidence, or self-image issues by “shedding one’s real personality”. There is nothing wrong with wearing a costume – but if you wear it because it boosts your confidence, then you spring back to your low self-esteem once the costume is taken off, then therein lies the problem. Instead of allowing young people to explore their true selves, they learn to hide behind masks and feel better by pretending to be someone else. The real self is discarded, as it does not produce the same satisfaction as the fantasy self. In this way, cosplay, for many shy youngsters who have self-image issues, becomes a form of escapism.
The world of cosplay, just like the world of of modeling, may give the youth unrealistic expectations of what they should be. False lashes, contact lenses that increase the size of one’s pupils, and wigs have become quite popular in the non-cosplay world, a phenomenon encouraged by cosplay. Many youngsters now look at these accessories as indispensible. Some cosplay critics believe that cosplay discourages people to be who they are, that it keeps people from being comfortable in their own skin while promoting a culture of pretense.
Cosplay also promotes the objectification of women. A lot of cosplayers will shun the idea of wearing plunging necklines in real life, but will not hesitate to wear skimpy costumes for cosplay. Many cosplay fans actually admire cosplayers because of their skimpy attire. Female cosplayers are objectified this way, earning the wrath of many feminists. There is a subset of cosplay that revolves around sex appeal: cosplayers actually choose very revealing, sometimes very explicit, costumes. To be blunt, cosplay has become the perfect excuse for many young women to wear inappropriate clothes under the guise of self-expression.

And before you call yourself or cosplayers as “otaku”…

In Japan, otaku has a negative impression. Decades ago, an “otaku” kidnapped many young girls and took videos of their dead bodies. This otaku serial killer has caused a lot of panic in Japan. Ever since, most Japanese think that to be called “otaku” is very insulting.

Many cosplay fans and cosplayers will beg to differ. But more and more people are getting diagnosed with cosplay sickness syndrome, where people who witness cosplay develop a severe aversion towards it. More psychological profiling needs to be done before the benefits and negative aspects of cosplay, from psychological, psychiatric, and social points of view, are properly identified.

Summit Magazine Subscription Problems

Two months ago, I paid for a fashion magazine subscription from Summit Publishing. I was told that I would receive my first magazine after two months – that’s this month. However, I have received no magazine thus far. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

I decided to call Summit at their hotline. On my first call, I was redirected by a recording to the subscription department. However, nobody was there to take my call. Twenty calls later, the same thing kept happening.

I’ve been trying to call Summit’s subscription department for more than a week, to no avail. Perhaps they just put up the phone number extension for that department so that they can say they do have that department. But contacting them is so much harder than you think.

I wonder, am I the only person who experienced this hassle before? Lesson learned: no more subscriptions from Summit! The Trinket Princess needs to get her fashion fix somewhere else. Thank God for online magazines!

Sports Wear Can Be Fashionable

The only thing about soccer and rugby I like to watch are the good-looking men. I know, I’m not much of a sports fan… but I still love fashion, which is why I want to blog about sportswear.

Last month, my best friend received a soccer shirt from her boyfriend, which she now wears as her nightie. I never thought there would be a place for sportswear in a lady’s closet, except if that lady is actually engaging in sports. But there goes my best friend, parading in her favorite soccer shirt, doing her nightly routine in what is, I have to admit, sportswear that looks interesting.

I’ve been looking for a baseball shirt that I can also wear to bed ever since. Perhaps the more fashion savvy women out there will refuse to wear a shirt intended for a man, especially at night. But there is something so sweet about wearing your boyfriend’s jersey or rugby shirt or soccer uniform.

I blame it (thankfully) on the Azkals and the Volcanoes. Ever since they won games for the Philippines, women started paying attention not only to the handsome players but also the sports. Going Japanese

Ever since the most recent earthquake that hit Japan, people started paying attention to the small but proud country. They showed composure and dignity at a time when others would have crumbled – which is probably why even their fashion sense shows a sense of individuality that many designers covet. Being touted as one of Asia’s most fashionable countries, Japan’s fashion sensibilities are going global.

Kimono-inspired ensembles, judo and obi belts, and even platform shoes reminiscent of Japanese slippers now litter the designers’ recent collections. This season’s Asian roots are starting to show, and they all point to a nostalgic understanding of what lies in the East.

Celine shows sheer brilliance in mixing different textures in a clean monotone ensemble. See-through fabrics make the outfits less “martial arts” and more “laid back femininity”.

Issey Miyake, refusing to be trounced, prefers to soften the strong, judo-based top with soft, draped bottoms.

Haider Ackermann sees something more promising in the Japanese outfit. His fashion palette is an artful oxymoron, boasting of strong hues combined with soft pastels. His love for contradictions also shows in rock chick laceups seen side by side with saccharine, ladylike pleats. His rendition of the obi belt is almost suggestive of origami, another homage to the Japanese.

Alexander Wang is not to be left behind. He stays true to the judo belt, opting instead to update the look by giving it modern touch ups, such as sizeable pockets.

Modern Japan shows so much more than their old fashion heritage when they don their street wear. But people love them for their iconic Japanese attires nonetheless. Perhaps the geisha appeal persists in everyone’s minds, or maybe anime has finally made its mark in the fashion culture. Whatever the reason, Japanese inspirations are becoming more and more pervasive. Their silent style is making a lot of noise in the fashion world – and we can’t help but listen.

I have just received good news today: I, the Trinket Princess, shall be featured at Manila Bulletin!

I was beside myself with joy when I heard the news. Who am I to be featured in one of the leading newspapers of our country? But yes, I was not stupid enough to say no. I was thrilled and immediately said yes!

How To Wear A White Skirt

Web Traffic Control: Scam or Not?

Recently, I received an email saying that I was qualified for a free account at Web Traffic Control, a website that offered automated advertising for Wordpress blogs. At first, I thought, great! It’s a free offer, so I might as well try it. Then, in the middle of my application, I started to wonder: Is the Web Traffic Control website a scam or not?

I then started to sign up. After I entered my blog information, it asked me to make an editor account on my Wordpress blog. I was about to do that, when it dawned on me that they were basically asking me to let them control my blog.

Wait a minute. Why didn’t they want an author account? An author account can publish blog posts, edit posts that have already been published, and schedule posts. Is that not enough (to think that creating an Author account for a company I’m not familiar with is already scary enough for me)?

Apparently, the Web Traffic Control website needs an Editor account on Wordpress to create new categories. Shouldn’t they just ask me to create new categories for them instead of asking me to just hand over my blog?

I balked. I shied away from the, um, “free” account given me. I’m sure that it’s just some marketing scheme they thought of to make signing up seem more enticing.

Actually, Web Traffic Control promised that their minimum price for each paid post on your blog is $15. Hm, not bad, which is why I started to sign up in the first place.

Perhaps Web Traffic Control is not a scam. Or maybe it is. But I’ll never really know until something happens to prove either point. In any case, I was too scared to tweak my Wordpress blog and give them almost full control of it, just for $15 blog posts. The Trinket Princess would rather get paid $5 for each post as long as nobody messes with my blog’s settings.

Stanley Chi hosts The Suplado Show on Dig Radio

Going through personal blogs is like a “good” bad habit for me. I get to know more about other people, get a myriad of ideas for my blog, and check out what’s really in without being dictated by ad-sponsored magazines. I then came across Life and Fever, a personal blog owned by a doctor-writer. And yes, she talks about clothes and makeup.

The blogger talked about why we put on makeup and the difference it makes. She took a picture of herself without makeup, and even posted it on her blog, something I can’t do. Even better, she took a picture of her face with one eye already with makeup, while the other is bare. She wanted to show what makeup can do by making a side by side comparison.

Yes, makeup is indeed a part of almost any woman’s daily routine. Sometimes, it makes me wonder, are we trying too hard to try to be someone else, or are we just bringing out the best in ourselves? You decide.

I’ve been thinking of having a few t-shirts designed, then having someone do the screen printing for me. I’ve always loved plain white tees with cute designs. I’ve also been craving for vintage t-shirts with rock ‘n roll designs, but I’m an XXS, so I can barely find any t-shirt that fits me well.

I typed “t shirts screen print” on Google and I came up with a few results. It seems that there are several types of t-shirt screen printing nowadays, some using digital technology to ensure that the results are just as you designed them. I wanted to know how much money, time, and effort it takes to have a tshirt design screen printed and my mind started to spin after a while. So, for everyone who wants the Basics 101 on Tshirt Screen Printing, below are a few pointers and tips.

The simpler the design, the better. Simple designs ensure that what works in theory will also work in reality. In other words, an elaborate design with many colors might not translate exactly as you thought it would. When learning how to do t-shirt screen printing, a simple design works better, especially if you are also under a certain budget.
Use common colors. I went through different shops, all equally elitist (which I hate) but beautiful (which I love). I then sauntered into Fendi. I’ve always liked the way their Spy Bag looked in magazines, but I never thought it would look so yummy! I’m not yet married, and I’m definitely not yet a mother. But a lot of my friends already have kids and I’ve noticed how most of them still exert an effort to look good even as they seem busy with household chores or their careers. Although I have yet to experience how it is to get pregnant, they keep telling me where to get fashionable maternity clothes.

One thing they do share with me about fashion and having children is that there are so very few stores out there that offer fashionable maternity clothing at a reasonable price. They tell me that most stores focus solely on comfort but with very little chic factor.

This is rather unfortunate. Mothers are still the same women they used to be before they started conceiving. They may still be concerned about their weight, about their clothes, and will be especially more concerned about their body image because pregnancy really changes the body, before and after the child is born.

Some of the mothers I know end up buying plus size clothing instead of proper maternity clothes. They say it’s actually much cheaper to avail of extra large clothes instead of maternity clothing, something which saddens me even more!

Women deserve great clothes, whether they’re single, married, pregnant, or otherwise. There should be more stores that offer fashionable and trendy maternity clothes. And because having a baby entails a lot of expenses, there should be discount clothing available for pregnant women, too.

When it comes to fashion, why should single women have all the fun? Pregnant women also deserve to be equally hip and trendy as their single counterparts. Where are the Fashion Blogs in the Philippines?

A good, unsponsored fashion blog in the Philippines is hard to search for – in search engines, that is. Go ahead, use the search words “fashion blog in the Philippines” in your favorite search engine and the search results will show a few blog rolls (like TopBlogs), some already well-established blogs (for instance, www.bryanboy.com), fashion blogs not from the Philippines (such as www.dcelestine.blogspot.com), and a few fashion websites that aren’t exactly blogs to begin with.

In fact, I tried entering the phrase “fashion blog in the Philippines” in Google Trends to determine how much it has been searched for. I was surprised as Google told me there wasn’t enough information to provide information. This was a first for me! Everytime I used Google Trends to look up which search terms in Philippine fashion were popular, I always get the same response: “not enough search volume”.

The Google Trends incident just shows that very few people care enough to search for fashion in the Philippines using search engines. I also tried “Philippine fashion” and Google Trends still didn’t have enough information. Maybe people just aren’t that into fashion in the Philippines.

Weird enough, fashion in the Philippines is supposed to be much better now than ever before. More and more independent Filipino designers are cropping up and establishing their names. Fashion in the Philippines is also getting a boost as a result of Filipino designers who have made it internationally, such as Monique Lhuillier and Rajo Laurel. Serving as inspiration to fuel one fashion blog in the Philippines after another, these renowned Filipino designers also give a glimmer of hope to the many hopeful new designers in our country.

According to Wikipedia, a fashion blog is an important tool for both designers and style watchers as it is through these blogs that new cuts, silhouettes, fabrics, and trends are spread throughout the world. This begs the question, why are fashion blogs in the Philippines so hard to look for? Shouldn’t search engines be riddled with independent blogs that chronicle all the milestones that Philippine fashion has already accomplished thus far?

Perhaps each fashion blog in the Philippines that has succeeded to earn readers has been sponsored to the point of bias. I have yet to see a fashion blog in the Philippines that makes it in the first page of the Google search results that has absolutely no sponsorship. After all, if a fashion blog starts getting sponsors, it also begins to promote the sponsor’s products regardless of the blogger’s personal opinion. In other words, a fashion blogger’s integrity is compromised once it promotes shamelessly.

Thus, I aim in earnest to establish a fashion blog in the Philippines that, hopefully and with a lot of hard work, will make it to the top of the search roster without ever having to rely on sponsored ads and free clothes from mainstream designers. I’m not saying I shall never promote designers willing to share their beautiful creations (if this even happens); however, I will keep in mind that as a fashion blog in the Philippines, my blog should carry a badge of honesty with it at all times. Philippine Fashion: Making Milestones

Once upon a time, Philippine fashion was conservative, very compromising, and afraid to venture outside of its comfort zone. Most “statements” in Philippine fashion were timid and looked pretty much like more refined versions of Western fashion trends.

But Philippine fashion has gone a long way. Magazines focusing on Philippine fashion are featuring less foreign names and more local designers. And, slowly but surely, more Filipinos are becoming household names in the international front.

Because Philippine fashion has taken great steps toward freedom of expression, one starts to wonder why. Although Filipinos are family-oriented and have a culture rich in old-fashioned values, it is apparent that Filipino women have become bolder, stronger, and more competitive through the years. A lot of Filipino women now hold important positions even in departments and industries that used to be run by a gamut of men. In fact, the country has elected two lady presidents in under three decades.

Philippine fashion is no longer a statement of conformity; it is now a statement of independence. Perhaps freedom as a “fashion trend” isn’t much of a surprise; after all, the Filipino people have struggled to free themselves from conquerors and dictators for centuries. And they have their freedom still intact.

In terms of Philippine fashion, more and more women now experiment with shapes and colors. Perhaps more Filipinas have yet to wear less jeans t-shirts; however, a stroll in the mall reveals how many women refuse to be caught in such a bleak-looking ensemble. Wearing sleeveless and tube tops used to be frowned upon; now, and quite rightfully considering the tropical climate in this country, women wear their tank tops and spaghetti straps with confidence, furthering the cause for freedom from stereotypes in the arena of Philippine fashion.

Even with the absence of many foreign designer labels in the Philippines, a few well-established ones are already making their mark in Philippine fashion. Designers in the Philippines have learned to become proud of their Filipino heritage, capitalizing on Philippine resources for their fabrics and materials. One good example is Tina Maristela-Ocampo, the famous Filipina behind Celestina bags who uses shells, wood, and other materials found proudly in the Philippines. Celestina bags are a great representative of how far Filipinos can go in the Philippine fashion industry.

As more Filipino designers continue to struggle for originality and boldness in Philippine fashion, the Philippines is fast becoming a little haven of style. Maybe, in the future, we no longer have to resort to Louis Vuitton or Balenciaga; perhaps “Juan dela Cruz” shall become enough of a fashion name.

Fashion Blogs in the Philippines

A fashion blog is a personal statement, a revelation – it’s wearing your heart on your sleeve in terms of your own style. No fashion blog that strives to hide personal taste ever successfully connects to its readers. That’s how it is: a fashion blog, especially in the Philippines, involves baring one’s soul. After all, style is personal.

Fashion blogs in the Philippines are earning more and more readers by the minute. Europe used to be the seat of fashion in decades past; however, Asia is fast becoming the center of fashion. They say Asians are bolder, funkier, much younger in the way they express themselves through fashion. Even the fashion blogs in the Philippines are gaining attention as more and more fashion magazines feature fashion bloggers in their pages.

For example, Preview magazine’s March 2010 issue featured a few Filipino fashion bloggers. Most of the fashion blogs, however, already have their own websites – in other words, they’ve gone mainstream long ago. What now of the little bloggers who strive to show their personal taste in fashion?

As for the many fashion blogs in the Philippines who are just starting to establish their roots, perhaps it will take time before the rest of the online Filipino community will catch onto them. But Filipino fashion blogs are rather refreshing compared to other more formal, more polished blogs. I prefer fashion raw, unadulterated – and unsponsored. Oops, there goes my chance of getting paid as a Filipino fashion blogger.

You see, the little bloggers are the ones who actually walk the streets in the clothes they actually blog about. Their style and statements fashion-wise are street-worthy. Not that mainstream fashion blogs in the Philippines have anything less; however, with the absence of sponsors, underground fashion blogs in the Philippines have no choice but to rely on their instincts, see with unbiased eyes, and choose what they feel is best for their fashion integrity.

Fashion blogs in the Philippines will soon have their moment. In the meantime, little fashion bloggers like myself will just have to invest some sweat and tears into our fashion blogs. Soon enough, soon enough.

Work In Progress

I’ve been working on a few trinkets and accessories and I just realized something: this is a lot of work. But I love burning my fingers every so often with my glue gun, so shoot me.

My blog-slash-online shop is still a work in progress, I know. But soon enough, I’ll be talking about fashion trends and showing my own clothes and accessories, together with a few great finds and some original pieces that I have. It will take time before I can say I have a properly running fashion blog in the Philippines. But here’s one blog post headed to that goal.
